PreOP Instructions [.phrase]

MEDICATIONS:

 

Blood thinner? ***

 

EXAMPLES:

Aspirin (ASA): 5 days

Clopidrogel (Plavix): 5 days

Ticagrelor (Brilinta): 5 days

Warfarin (Coumadin): 5 days

Apaxiban (Eliquis): 2-3 days

Rivaroxaban (Xarelto): 2-3 days

Dabigatran (Pradaxa): 2-4 days

Dalteparin (Fragmin): 2-3 days

Edoxaban (Savaysa): 2-3 days

Enoxaparin (Lovenox): 12-24 hrs

Heparin: 12-24 hrs

 

Diabetes medication? No 

 

  1. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE ASPIRIN. STOP 5 DAYS PRIOR TO PROCEDURE. NOT STOPPING WILL RESULT IN PROCEDURE BEING CANCELLED.

2. Ok to take your usual medications with a sip of water in the morning on the day of your procedure (but no later than 2 hours prior to the procedure)

3. OK to continue to use your inhalers

4. Take your blood pressure and/or other heart medicines as prescribed unless you have been instructed to hold these medicines by your primary care provider or your cardiologist (due to low blood pressure or low heart rate, or any other recent changes)

5. OK to take Tylenol or Acetaminophen

6. Bring in your routine medicines in their original bottles, or up-to-date medication list.

7. If in doubt, do NOT take your insulin, but bring it with you along with all your other medications.

 

 

FOOD/DRINK: 1. DO NOT EAT or DRINK ANY LIQUIDS after 4:00 am on 6/12/23 (at least 8 hours before your check-in time).  If your procedure is scheduled late in the day, you may drink liquids such as juice, milk, coffee as long as it is before 8 hours of your check-in time.  Your procedure may be canceled if you fail to follow this instruction.

2. After the procedure, your mouth and throat may feel numb for a few hours. You may start drinking and eating once the numbness wears off and you can swallow normally.

3. If you have low blood sugars (<70mg/dL), drink 1/2cup of clear beverage such as Apple juice, Sprite, or 7Up

      Location: any Diagnostic Laboratory Services (DLS) location near you

• Pre-op lab test orders have been sent to DLS electronically.

• Stop by any DLS location near you. No need to fast for the blood tests.

 

 

RECREATIONAL DRUGS

 

  Certain recreational drugs may interfere with general anesthesia during procedure. As a general rule,

  please do not use any for atleast one week before your procedure date. Continued use may result in               

  procedure being cancelled. Please call for questions.

 

 

RIDE:

 

Accompanied by family/friend? ***

 

If you will be alone after the procedure, Endoscopy staff will arrange MEDI-CAB. Please provide the telephone # of family/friend, who will call to check on you after the procedure.  

     Please arrange someone to accompany you after your procedure when you leave the hospital.

• You cannot drive post procedure

• You must be accompanied by a responsible adult who can drive you

• You must be accompanied by a responsible adult if you are taking a taxi or public transportation

• If you are traveling alone from the neighbor island, you will not be able to fly home on the same day. You will need to stay at a hotel, or your family/friend on Oahu overnight, then return home the next day.

 

PRECAUTIONS FOR PATIENT/CAREGIVER:  

1. Limit 1 accompanying caregiver per patient.

2. You and your companion will wear masks to the Endoscopy in the main hospital building.

3. You and your companion will undergo temperature and symptom check prior to entering the main hospital building

4. Your companion does not need to remain on the hospital grounds during the procedure. S/he can drop you off at the curbside/circle drive and return to pick you up after the procedure as long as s/he can be reached via telephone. Endoscopy staff will bring you down to the curbside/circle drive of the main hospital building, so your companion does not need to park in the hospital garage.

5. The main hospital building has valet parking.
